Currently we are looking for volunteers to help our organization grow and continue with its mission. We need help in all areas of our work from office support, teaching and supporting families, and untold other small tasks that will support our operation. In March 2000, five African American women in Los Angeles with mentally ill relatives came together and formed a group to support each other. Their quest for information and answers led them to NAMI and the Family to Family education course taught by Sharon Dunas in West Los Angeles. Upon graduation and eager rto learn and do more, three of the women took the training to become family teachers. And there the NAMI journey began. By Spring 2003, NAMI Urban Los Angeles was born. Combining their talents as physicians, artists and entrepreneurs Nancy Carter, Bebe Moore Campbell, Dr. Lynn Goodloe, Judy Elder, Jo Helen Graham and Dr. Benita Council became the board of directors of one of the newest affiliates in the State of California. Mentored by the indomitable Stella March and with the help of "We the People", a local paralegal service they incorporated their 501C(3) nonprofit in an amazing 6 weeks! The membership has grown from an original five to seventy five and is building steadily. Family classes and a monthly support group for caregivers and consumers bring a needed service to an underserved community. These dedicated women practice what they preach and preach what they practice. Their motto is "No Family Stands Alone"!
